Barrington Area Restaurants

Wool Street

One of the joys of living in the NW suburbs are the fine independently owned restaurants & bars.  One you might like to try is Wool Street Grill & Sports Bar, with locations in both Barrington and Cary.  The Barrington location is a personal favorite of mine and apparently, I have lots of company as Wool Street was the Daily Herald Reader's Choice for Best Neighborhood Restaurant and Sports Bar in the NW suburbs!

There are daily food specials, a family friendly atmosphere and for the grown-ups, an outstanding selection of domestic, imported and premium beers!  Do yourself a favor and check out one or both of Wool Street's Locations:

As Reviewed on Waymark.com:  Chessie's Restaurant and its sister restaurant, The 111 Grill, provide a wonderful menu of American cuisine.

Named after the old Chessie System railroad (now CSX), the Chessie's Restaurant section of the building includes a fully-enclosed dining car to enhance the Americana ambiance they are trying to instill.

The food and service are excellent. I like to gauge the quality of the vegetables to rate a restaurant. In many places the vegetables are over-cooked and rubbery. The vegetables I received here were steamed perfectly to where they were warm and tender, but yet still with a little crisp.

This is a great breakfast place with all the popular places popping up all over the place, this place is just the quintessential breakfast joint. They offer a full menu although I must admit I always order breakfast.

From savory/sweet crepes, frittatas, awesome skillets and enormous omelets. This past weekend I ordered scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon crepe with Hollandaise Sauce. I think the sauce is great. Maybe a little thicker than you are used to but it is nice that it is not runny. My old man always gets the Gypsy Skillet which is his absolute favorite. Of course they do the old classics as well but will also put a new twist on them if you are open to it.

We have been meeting here for breakfast for years. It's a great restaurant to even drive out of the way for, no matter where you live. The staff is friendly and the owner is like the greek uncle you never had but always wanted!

We knew the winner before the votes were counted. At Giordano's restaurant it was unanimous love at first taste. It's pizza was so delicious that we applauded the chef, Efren Boglio. He told us this story:

"My brother Joseph and I both own and cook for Giordano's. We were born in a small northern Italian town near Torino, where our mother was known for her exquisite dishes. Of all her repertoire, though, my family was most fond of her deep-dish, double-crusted pizza, which she made on Easter and stuffed with ricotta cheese.

I loved her pizza so much that when I came to America in 1967 I took a job at a pizza restaurant, pleased to be near my favorite food. but the pizza there was only fair-not nearly as good as Mother's. And, as time passed, I tasted pizzas at other restaurants, I was surprised to find that the very best around didn't approach the worst of those I'd eaten back home in the old country.

So I opened my own pizza restaurant. It was called Roma and was doing all right. But then my brother Joseph came to Chicago, and we decided to close Roma and open a restaurant specializing in Mothers's

pizza-one which would be called by her name, Giordano. We worked for months, trying to develop a superlative Chicago variation of Mother's pizza; then, in February 1974, we opened Giordano's.

Don't get the idea that we're satisfied, though. We're not. We alter our pizzas as time passes, as the necessity arises. Our first pizzas, for example, had just the right amount of garlic for us, but too much for most of our customers; so we cut down some of it. But besides surveying our customers constantly, Joseph and I go once a week, to different pizza restaurants, in order to taste the competition.

The thing about pizza is that like everything good, it has to have an evolution. To stay the same means to go backward. It wasn't my mother or my brother and myself who invented the pizza we serve here. The recipe probably began with our great, great, great, great, great-grandmother. You ask how long it took to develop the recipe. I'd have to say 200 to 300 years. And it's still developing."

Burger Leads the Charge in Appetizing Bar-and-Grill Menu
Chicago Tribune

Hackney's is a bar and grill made good - good enough to expand into a Chicagoland chain of five. The original Hackney's in Glenview shows the success is no fluke. Prices may be a dollar or so higher than at some other burger joints, but standards here are pretty high.

When the weather cooperates the best seating for all is outdoors, under the trees.

The tavern's renown rests mainly on two items: its burger, served between squares of dark rye, and the loaf of deep fried onions.

Lets start with the onions ($3.45 half order or $4.45 full), as most of the customers seem to do. This dish has to be the brainchild of an enterprising grill cook tired of herding batches of onion rings through the deep frier. Instead of being allowed to run loose, raw rings of Spanish onion are drenched with batter, dusted with flour and packed into a small deep-fry basket before frying. The result is a sweet, delicately crispy tangle. A half-order easily fills the appetizer needs of two or three.

Two other fried appetizers - the mushrooms ($3.95) and clam strips ($3.95) - aren't quite as good because they use a cracker-meal coating instead of the onion-loaf batter.

On to the burger, a half-pounder they will serve on an egg bun instead of dark rye, if you ask. Well textured and beefy, it satisfies any burger cravings you might have. Accompanying fries are plentiful and perfect: golden, crisp and just the right size. The dollop of coleslaw is the creamy sort.

Fat-conscious burger-lovers can try the buffalo burger ($7.45) or the Tom T turkey burger ($6.45); both come with fries to negate any health-giving properties. We tried the turkey burger, which requires a dose of ketchup to counter its blandness.
Among the dozen sandwich choices (all with fries and coleslaw) is a fine Reuben ($6.95), generous with its lean (if preternaturally pink) corned beef topped with crisp, fresh-tasting sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese between slices of grilled, buttered rye.

A house salad ($2.25) is colorful with deep green lettuce and shredded carrots and not much else, but the greens are crisp and well dried before dressing: No wet salads here.

Daily specials range from bratwurst on Monday to a Friday fish fry. Steaks, ribs and grilled fish are available but start at $10.95, just out of Cheap Eats territory.

For dessert try a tall wedge of apple pie ($2.95). The tender but not very flaky crust can barely contain its load of chunky fruit, which is mercifully free of the goo found in many pies. When asked whether you would like it warm, with cinnamon ice cream, say yes.

Servers are fast, helpful and adept at negotiating the minimal space between tables filled with families. A full bar and several tap beers are a given; a test of the bartender's skills produced a creamy, well-poured glass of draft Guinness.

Egg Harbor Café is a restaurant specializing in gourmet breakfast and lunch creations served from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily, in a warm, charming, country setting with fast, friendly and efficient service.  The first Egg Harbor Café was hatched in December 1985. The founders were regular breakfast diners who always wanted to open a breakfast restaurant. They spent years visiting various breakfast houses across the country, looking to create a breakfast restaurant that had just the right menu, the right attitude and the right atmosphere. Today with 15 locations and in our third generation as a family-owned business, Egg Harbor Café reaches a wide range of wonderful customers who appreciate the winning formula created by our founders and refined over the years.

Egg Harbor Café´s mission statement is, “Improving service in every sense.” The mission is based upon what the owners call “The Foodservice Triangle,” where each of the five senses are taken into account when balancing the quality of three essential elements - food, service and atmosphere. Egg Harbor Café leadership teams undergo a comprehensive training process to learn the highest standards of food preparation, effective management skills and the guiding principles of service.

Owners John Wright and Mike and Aimee Farrell believe that Egg Harbor´s regular customers are the glue that holds us together. As a family-owned company involving three generations of children and grandchildren (including siblings, nieces and nephews), we pride ourselves in being an extended family to a great number of people, both employees and customers, and in our restaurants´ active involvement in their local communities.
